It won’t be long before these kids are leaving Kevin and I in the dust during a 5k. Last Saturday there was a fun run 5k called the Santa Run put on by the local trail enhancement committee, the entry fee being one unwrapped toy apiece. We took the kids down and decided to test out Jack’s legs on a 5k distance. ![]()
As kids are, he had other ideas. First he warmed up with a 1/4 mile (maybe less) run with Santa Claus. I mean who doesn’t want to chase after the man in red? Emilie did this kid’s run too. In the picture above she’s the one riding piggy back on the woman in the green shirt (yeah, not quite ready to 5k yet, that one) Jack then did the 5k with me while Emilie rode in the stroller. Considering that’s another 3.1 miles on top of what he’d already done he was pretty impressive. He jogged, walked, and got piggybacked a little, but never said he couldn’t do it. He just kept on plugging. He (and I) even did the free burpee handed out around mile 3.
Author’s note: For those who don’t know what a burpee is. Standing upright, jump. Then squat down and put your hands on the ground. Kick your legs back into a plank position. Do a push-up. Hop your legs forward back to the squat position. Jump up. Congratulations! You have just completed one burpee.
Kevin and I traded off running with Jack and pushing Emilie in the stroller. We finished the race in just under 48minutes. So that’s about a 16 minute mile. Not to shabby for a 6 year old whose ‘training’ regimen includes running in circles chasing the dog.
The best part, according to Jack, was the lady at the end of the race giving him and Emilie a ‘trophy.’ This amounted to a partial box of Kirkland chocolate chip cookies that she didn’t want to take home herself. Yes kiddo, part of the reason we run is for the food/drink at the end ![]()
