Welcome Baby Owen!

The kids got a brand new cousin today. This brings our tally to seven nephews in all..(no nieces)

OwenHunter

Meet Owen Hunter. He arrived a 9:34am this morning. The scales tipped at 8lbs 6oz and he’s  20.5” long.

His big brother’s Matty & Noah took their new siblings as only 4 & 2 year olds can. They wanted to know why he has an electrical cord on his tummy. HA!

Both Mom and Owen are doing fantastic. A huge congrats to the whole family. Mandy, Colin, Noah, Matty…and little Owen.

Emilie Louise Duchow

IMG_0721

As most of you already know we were blessed with a new addition to our family on Wednesday April 6th, 2011 at 7:54am. She weighed in at 7lbs 9oz and was 20.5 inches long. Healthy, happy, and absolutely perfect. She has her family wrapped around her finger and head over heels in love with her already.

The Arrival

What follows below is my version of her arrival, guess you could call it a birth story. I’m keeping it PG though. However I thought I’d forewarn as some people don’t care to read about that ‘stuff’.

The big day started at 4:30 in the morning. Our c-section time was scheduled for 7:30am and we needed to be at Labor and Delivery by 5:30am to check in. Thank goodness we live less than ten minutes from the hospital or we would have had to be up even earlier. Not that we slept much the night before anyway. Granny and Grandpa Wannamaker were there to watch Jack so we kissed him goodbye until that afternoon and headed off.

When we checked in the immediately took us down to what would be our recovery room and where we would stay until we were discharged. (Makes sense I guess as there was no reason to take up a L&D room) I got changed into a hospital gown, they took my weight and blood pressure, asked all the standard questions, we filled out a couple of forms, got a blood draw, etc. Glenda, the nurse we had that day was wonderful. After the phlebotomist struggled with getting my vein to cooperate for a blood draw (I can be a difficult person to draw blood from anyway and since I hadn’t had anything to drink since 9pm the night before…..well  you get the picture) she called another nurse, who used to be a trauma nurse for several years, to come do my IV. She also said she’d wait on doing the catheter until I’d gotten my spinal as she “Didn’t believe in practicing dark magic on expectant mammas.” She made me laugh.

By  6:45am we were ready to go and spent the next 30 minutes pretty much waiting for the doctor to arrive. At about 7:15 the anesthesiologist came in and went over the spinal procedure. He gave me this really nasty Bismuth something or other medication to neutralize my stomach acid. It tasted terrible, but later I would be very thankful for that little shot-cup of nastiness.

About 7:20 they came in and told Kevin to put on his jump suit, booties, and hat (forgot to take a picture of that). Then they walked us down the hall to the OR. Kevin got to sit outside the door while they took me into what had to be the brightest and whitest room I have ever been in. I climbed up on the OR table and sat there while the anesthesiologist did the spinal. I still hate that part the worst; sitting in that uncomfortable hunched over position is the pits. However, it is much easier when you are not in labor and having contractions.

I could tell when the spinal took effect, my toes immediately started to tingle. They laid me back and within two minutes I was numb from the middle of my ribcage down. Then the curtain was put up. From that point on I really can’t tell you what went on anywhere below my chest. I really don’t want to know the details either. When you check in to Labor and Delivery modesty checks out. Sometimes it is nice just to be oblivious to it all.

Remember that stomach acid neutralizing junk they had given me earlier? This is where it came in handy. Shortly after going numb I started to feel lightheaded and nauseous. I told the anesthesiologist and he got out the puke bucket for me. Bless that man and his drugs! The stuff he had given me completely eliminated that nasty burning you normal have when you throw up. Nice to avoid since I couldn’t rinse my mouth out afterwards obviously.

After emptying what little was in my stomach I felt great! Well, the part of me I could feel felt great anyways. They brought Kevin in and sat him on a stool next to my head. At some point the nurse put in the catheter. Then the Dr. came in and asked if a resident could attend. Sure, why not?

At 7:29am the started the c-section. I really didn’t realized they had started. All the Dr. asked after noting the time was, “Can you feel this?” and I said, “Can I feel what?” Then I got to hear all the latest L&D gossip. There was a lady who decided to give birth standing up and the Dr. really had to practice his catching skills. Dr. Astin would be on that night and he tends to attract all the wild and crazy deliveries and so forth. Then the Dr. said, “Yep, definitely a baby in there” and about a minute or so later Emilie made her grand debut loudly voicing her displeasure at the current state of her affairs. It was 7:59am.

They showed her to me briefly than took her across the room to clean her up and get her vitals. Kevin went over and took pictures while I watched as they sewed me up. Once they got her cleaned and wrapped up she was brought back over to say ‘Hi’ then she and Kevin went down to the nursery while they finished with me.

Once I was stitched up and the Dr’s had moved along (the nursesIMG_4623 really do the majority of the work I noticed) I remember thinking to myself, “Now how are they going to get me off this table and back to my room?” I was dead weight lying on the OR table and could be absolutely NO help to them. I found out soon enough. They brought the bed down from our room and used this nifty little roller board to slide me from the table to the bed. Then they just drove me back to my room. Very slick.

While I waited to have Emilie brought to the room Glenda ran all my vitals again. They drew more blood and I was given some ice to chew on. Finally, something to eat! I hadn’t eaten or drunk anything since around 9pm the previous night. When the ice stayed down Glenda decided I could have something more substantial and ordered a meal of clear liquids. This turned out to mean green J-ello, beef broth, and apple juice…uhhh,  yum?

Most of the day was spent bonding with Emilie. Granny and Grandpa brought Jack for a visit mid afternoon. I thought he would be more excited to meet his little sister, but there were some loading cranes working outside my window which upstaged Emilie. Two year olds have their priorities. Fortunately now that she is home Jack absolutely loves his baby.

By the end of the first day I was up and out of bed and most of the monitoring equipment had been removed. We spent the following day continuing to recover and by Friday afternoon we were discharged and sent home.

37 Weeks

I will be completely honest, I'm NOT one of those women who just LOOOOVES being pregnant. I love the fact that I'm growing a tiny human being and that I've been blessed with uncomplicated pregnancies both times, and I can't wait to welcome this new little one into the world, but actually being pregnant is not my favorite thing in the world.

I think it has something to do with the fact that I spend week 6 to week 15 or so wrapped around the toilet, then from week 24 or so on with round ligament pain and sore hips that get progressively worse as the baby grows. Plus, this time around my back has taken up serious issues with the extra weight on my front and in the last week or so I've developed some really bad indigestion (a bout of food poisoning for St. Paddy's day really didn't help things).

Needless to say that I'm glad to have reached 37 weeks, the official 'Full Term', date for pregnancy. I've told this little lady that she can come any time she wants, but the lease on her cozy little womb runs outs in 14 days. Seeing how her parents are proponents of getting the most "bang for your buck" I predict she'll stay in there right up until the sixth and use up all the baking time she's being given. But I can try bribes right? ;-P

My appointment this week was good. Blood pressure is normal, little to no swelling, and I lost a pound (probably from the food poisoning), baby's fluid levels are normal, and passed the NST (non-stress test) without a hitch. Pretty much we are still good to go.

One Month and Counting

IMG_0546

Yesterday marked 35 weeks of pregnancy . When I glanced at the baby ticker it said 35 days to go. Well this is not wholly true, you actually have to subtract seven days because this baby is arriving by c-section and will be here April 6th…so its really more like 28 days. We are officially under the one month mark!

(Side note: For those who don’t know, Jack had a shoulder dystocia complication during birth and broke his collarbone during delivery. The outcome in Jack’s case was very good; however permanent injury can occur. Since the chance of reoccurrence is 1 in 10 we’ve chosen to have a c-section for safety’s sake.)

I had an appointment this week as well. Everything looks good. Baby is right around the 5lb mark, which is average for gestational age. Heartbeat is 138 bpm, there is a normal amount of fluid surrounding the baby, and head is down. Everything is normal with me as well. Pretty much we are good to go.

Here are some pictures from yesterday’s ultrasound.

Baby’s face. I looked at some u/s pictures from Jack. Thinking these two are going to have the same nose. Actually they look pretty similar overall…..

A cute little footie….and an elbow. Baby really is bendy in there. When the tech was taking the face picture she had to wait for Baby to move both hands, and a foot out of the way.

Below is Leg and an Arm picture.

Now for that all important question…boy or girl?

Yes they were able to tell

Jack is getting a little sister! Kevin apparently has the know-how to make both boy and girl babies….a feat so far unmatched by close family this generation. We are all very excited and are counting down the days until we get to meet this little lady face to face.

Thinking Pink

Hopefully you have all got our Christmas letter by now and know that when it comes to the gender of this baby things are still well…under wraps so to speak. The baby absolutely refused to open its legs more than a fraction of an inch and the view wasn’t very good. What that means is that the u/s tech couldn’t say for sure if baby was a girl or boy. Though she did say that she could not see anything ‘dangling’ in the few shots she got. However, she also couldn’t get the right angle to see any girl parts either. She said her best guess would be a girl though… The OB agreed with her but they wouldn’t but anything on the record besides that we are looking at a healthy baby, which is the most important. Alas, we must suffer without knowing until the next ultrasound.

In the meantime thought I’d share a few u/s pictures.

Jack’s New Shirt

I have lots more pictures and stories out of Massachusetts to share but I’ve been waiting since long before our trip to make this post. So I will post those other things later and post this instead. See Jack got a brand new t-shirt several weeks back and he would like to share it with you.

IMG_3423

What do you think? We are all very excited. Especially now that Mommy is done being nauseous all the time and can tolerate food smells again. The official due date is April 12 and we’ll find out gender around Thanksgiving. Anyone know when Easter is this year? I still don’t have a 2011 calendar to see if we will have a new baby for the bunny or not.
