We celebrated Father’s Day a day early this year by taking a trip to the zoo. The kids had a blast seeing all the animals. If you ask Jack his favorite part was the Spider Monkeys and the ‘Orty’ pigs (Warty Pigs). Emilie enjoyed the butterfly garden and feeding the goats. Kevin thought the new jelly fish exhibit was pretty nifty. I myself got a kick out of the ‘ninja’ squirrel stealing breakfast from the Patagonian Cavies.
We parked at the MK center (so the kids can look at the fish) as usual, and hoofed it the mile down the Boise river trail to the Zoo. You would have thought Emilie was a parade princess the way she smiled, waved, and said ‘Hello!’ to everyone we passed.
Lunch was a picnic by the big Giraffe slide and was a hit all around. It was the first time we taken lunch and ate while in the zoo and it worked out pretty well. I can see us doing this again in the future.
As a special Father’s Day treat Kevin decided that the kids should do the Giraffe Encounter. For $3 apiece each kid got a leaf of lettuce to feed to one of the Zoo’s Giraffes. The money goes toward conservation efforts and is a fundraise of sorts for the zoo. Both kids were in awe of the Giraffe as you can see from the photos. Seriously, the things head was about the size of Emilie….who wouldn’t be in awe?
In all it was a fantastic day. After the zoo while Emilie snoozed in the stroller we did a loop around the downtown area of Boise before heading back to the car. Then we sampled the $.50 cones that Burger King has on right now. (They were a good size cones for .50 and we probably could have gotten away with 2, as neither kid was able to finish theirs. But we didn’t know so Kevin and I ended up eating waaaay too much ice cream).
On Father’s day itself we just chilled out. Puttered around the garden a bit, took the kids for a bike ride at the park, and cooked a Dutch oven dinner (topped off with S’mores) in the fire pit. Couldn’t have asked for a nicer weekend in my opinion…
