This is a rough ideas of what our yard normally looks like.
This is what it looked like at 2:30 this morning. Note the retaining wall is almost covered and it’s usually got 4 railroad ties showing.
About 8 o’clock last night our peaceful evening was disturbed by the neighbor knocking on the door. He seemed a bit more flighty than usual so when Kevin came back I inquired about what the hullaballoo was now.
Seems the farmer up the road opened his headgate to irrigate his field and left before he realized the culvert crossing under the road was clogged. Therefore water was running down the road instead of watering the filed.
At that point we weren’t too concerned. It’s water…on the lawn *gasp*. Our lawn slopes away from the house so we figured the water would just pool there and the farmer would come fix his clog in the morning. No biggie and we’ll flood out the gophers.
About midnight Kevin realized that the rate of flow was a lot higher than he had originally thought and we may be in a bit of a pickle so he went down to the clogged culvert and fiddled with it a bit to try and get the thing unplugged. That didn’t work, so he ran into town to see if Wal*Mart might have a pump we could use to get the water from our lawn over the last little rise into the canal. Nope, that most be the one thing Wal*Mart doesn’t have. By this point the water was about 4 feet from the house and that is where I draw the line.
Still scratching out heads on what to do we called the one number we could find for the Canal Company and crossed our fingers. Low & behold they do have somebody on call down there 24/7 (or at least he gets to take the emergency cell home so people can call him at 3am)! ‘Troy, sounded tired, but we explained the situation and gave him our location. He sighed and said, “Okay, let me get my boots on.” Took him about 20 minutes to get here and another 15 or so to shut the right headgate (there are two up there) Said he call the farmer in the morning to have him work on the culvert.
As for us, we won’t have to get out the ark just yet. Jack & Emilie have a nice wading pool in the backyard today though, so we might have to bust out the water-wings. The dogs, well Tilly (the lab) anyway, think the new water feature is AWESOME! The water is slowly receding.
As far as the gophers fate. Well, they move to high ground as you can see….and Kevin put out the trap.
