Swimming Lessons

IMG_4125

After many weeks of anticipation swimming lessons have finally begun. Can you really call them lessons at Jack’s age? It is really more of a get-used-to-being-in-the-water sort of thing; still he is learning something new and that would define a ‘lesson.’ Anyway, we’ve had four sessions so far and Jack is loving it….unless it gets a little breezy (its an outside pool) and he gets chilly.

During lessons we sing a lot of songs like ‘Motorboat motorboat' and ‘The Hokey-pokey’ . We also hop like a frog and blow bubbles in the water. We chase little boats around (teaches how to hold out your arms and paddle), and float on our backs then roll over. Pretty much all the basics of being in the water. Jack’s  favorite part is jumping off the side of the pool into the water…of course. This is closely followed by being thrown up in the air and making a splash landing and going down the slide.

Robin, his instructor is really nice and even had him test out lifejackets to find a size/style that he liked and fit. Plus had him practice floating around in it, during which time he almost fell asleep (it was just so soothing I guess). Needless to say we are having a good time. The only downside is that we are the only pair in class. Guess 5:15pm on weeknights is too early for most.

Oh well, it still hasn’t stopped Jack from meeting people. Wednesday morning at daycare two little girls (maybe 3 & 5) came running up  to us when I dropped off Jack and announced, “We saw you at Swim Lessons!” Thursday evening at lessons I saw the girls come out of the locker room with their mom and little brother while we were waiting for class to start. I waved to the girls, who announced to their mother that ‘baby Jack’ goes to daycare with them and he cries sometimes (Jack cries when we get out of the pool). I also recognized their little brother, who is about a year, as Timmy one of the little boys Jack was at the Infant Care Center with. So their Mom and I chatted a bit before lessons….mostly about how fantastic the gals at the Infant Care Center are. So even though we are taking class solo we are still meeting new Moms with kids which was a hope of mine for these lessons.

We’ve got one more week of lessons then we’ll be ready to hit the pools, lakes, and rivers this summer.
